Process Mapping to Optimize L&D and Performance Improvement

Robert Damelio

You can use Process Mapping to ensure that performance and learning interventions are effective and produce the desired results. During this interactive session, I’ll share with you my thoughts on:

  • What is Process Mapping?
  • How Process Maps can be used in the development of learning materials
  • Benefits of Process Maps to those who develop learning materials, customers of learning developers, such as learners, and External customers
“If you put a good performer in a bad system, the system will win every time.” Geary Rummler

      Session Description

Instructional Designers, Course Developers, and Performance Improvement professionals can use Process Mapping to identify the specific outputs, work products, or accomplishments associated for a given learner within the context of the conditions each learner faces in their immediate work environment.

Process Mapping increases the likelihood that learning interventions are effective and produce the desired performance results. By results, I mean job-relevant performance and output(s), expertise, skill(s), knowledge, to the expected standard(s), measures, criteria, and sources of feedback. At least that’s how I used Process Maps when I designed and developed custom learning materials for a wide variety of Fortune 500 Clients. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

How can you learn more about how to do this? I learned it from Geary Rummler, of course.  Geary knew a lot about Process Mapping, I assure you. I encourage you to confirm this for yourself by checking out Geary’s work in Improving Performance: Managing the White Space, 2nd Edition. Trust me on this, you want the 2nd Edition.
